Homosexuality

Description:

Harry A. Blackmun:

[Disapproval of homosexuality cannot justify] invading the houses, hearts and minds of citizens who choose to live their lives differently

Dissent in Bowers v. Hardwick June 30, 1986

Pat Buchanan:

The poor homosexuals – they have declared war on nature, and now nature is exacting an awful retribution.

New York Post, February 24, 1983.

Pat Buchanan:

Yes, we disagreed with President Bush. But we stand with him for freedom to choose religious schools. And we stand with him against the amoral idea that gay and lesbian couples should have the same standing in law as married men and women.

Speech before the Republican National Convention. August 17, 1992.

Michael Savage:

Oh, you're one of the sodomites. You should get AIDS and die, you pig! Why don't you see if you can sue me, you piece of garbage? Go eat a sausage and choke on it. Get trichinosis.

Talking on MSNBC, July 7, 2003

Bishop John Spong:

The priesthood in many ways is the ultimate closet in Western civilization, where gay people particularly have hidden for the past two thousand years.

Daily Telegraph, July 12, 1990.

Rowan Williams:

It seems to me rather sad, and rather revealing, that when it comes to sex we suddenly become much less intelligent about our reading of the Bible. If the Bible is very clear - as I think it is - that a heterosexual indulging in homosexual activity for the sake of variety and gratification is not following the will of God, does that automatically say that that is the only sort of homosexual activity there could ever be? My own personal conclusion is that I can see a case for acknowledging faithful same-sex relationships.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in a BBC interview. Quoted in: CNN, August 8, 2003.

About This Site:

This site serves as an archive of quotations dealing with religion and philosophy. Specific topics covered include, but are not limited to: God, faith, reason, skepticism, atheism, agnosticism, fundamentalism, extremism. The quotes are chosen on the basis of my finding them interesting - regardless of whether I agree with them or not. This is by no means an exhaustive collection, although it does grow as I add quotes regularly.

Suggestions? Feel free to email me with quotations you think could be added. I can't guarantee that I will respond to each message and, please, be sure to include a full citation with each quote. There are a lot of sites out there that have many quotes without citations, thus preventing readers from being able to trace the authorship. I have very few of those and don't want any more, if I can help it.
