Pope Paul VI makes a historic visit to the Holy Land where he embraces Athenagoras of Istanbul, patriarch of the Orthodox Church.

This meeting will lead directly to both sides rescinding the mutual excommunications originally issued in 1054 and which created the Great Schism between the Western Latin and Eastern Orthodox churches.

That will not reestablish communion between the two Christian churches, but it will be a significant and necessary step in that direction.
